Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
