The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, causing him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
