The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
