Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
