The buzz around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
