Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
