EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
