Around fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located many other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the attack rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
